9½ Weeks

Kim Basinger is very attractive (though I don't much care for her hair in this picture) and I really like Mickey Rourke as a performer (though I think he is wasted in this picture), and sexual obsession is a great topic, but it doesn't get its due in this picture. As drama this is pure hogwash; we never figure anybody out, and as erotica it is only fair; some scenes are pretty erotic (and it contains a few good ideas) but it's not nearly as steamy as I had expected, based on all the controversy it elicited upon release. Visually it is typical Adrian Lyne videoglitz, but even lingering closeups of Basinger's mouth cannot make up for a picture that makes “Flashdance” look like “Gone With The Wind.”
