Amy’s Orgasm

Like “Sex and Lucia,” (see right) this is a movie whose virtues far outweigh the reductive banality of its title. Julie Davis wrote, directed, and stars (who does she think she is, M. Night Shyamalan?) in the picture, and it’s a smart, funny romantic comedy. Davis plays Amy Mandell, a woman who is truly the soul sister of Jessica in Kissing Jessica Stein, and maybe those “Sex and the City” gals. Amy has written a best selling self help book whose premise is that “love doesn’t work.” She then meets radio shock-jock Matthew Starr (Nick Chinlund), and these seeming opposites begin to attract. Amy must confront her own needs, insecurities, and convictions in order to find what really makes her happy. (So does Matthew, for that matter.) None of this is particularly new ground, I admit, but Davis keeps it snappy, fresh, and funny.
