Demolition Man

Starring: Sylvester Stallone, Wesley Snipes

A truly numbskulled action thriller, with Stallone as a thawed-out cop trying to catch thawed-out crook Snipes, who laughs dementedly throughout the picture, because he's--well--demented. In the meantime, macho Stallone teaches those namby-pamby future dwellers about the virtues of guns and gratuitous violence. The very expensive looking production proves only that money isn't enough to create a convincing looking world. It also takes some originality and creativity. The picture's satire is weak, and the attempts at humor are generally strained, consisting for the most part of Stallone mugging as he is introduced to the wacky ways of the future. Dennis Leary shows up, again playing the leader of a band of misfits (there seems to be a pattern here) as the filmmakers try to cobble together their weak excuse for a plot. In the end, old reliable 20th century mayhem and macho posturing win the day, and society is restored to its former, er, glory.What a relief. (10/26/93)
