George Lucas in Love

Though it’s only about nine minutes long, and cannot be seen in theaters, this terrific film may just be the funniest, smartest, and most heartfelt of the year. Modeling itself after “Shakespeare in Love,” the movie simultaneously skewers and exalts Lucas and the “Star Wars” mythos. The fun Nussbaum and Shere have with the source material is a true reflection of their love and respect for it. The best parodies are usually written by those who have a real appreciation for the original. “George Lucas in Love” tells the story of one George Lucas (way before he became famous), struggling with writer’s block on the USC campus in 1967. A lovely young woman helps Lucas overcome his block and teaches him to use the world before his eyes as inspiration for his work. Though not absolutely crucial, it helps to have at least a passing familiarity with the major players and themes in the “Star Wars” movies. Real fans will want to watch “George Lucas in Love” several times, to catch all of the quick but relevant jokes. Beautifully written, directed, acted, and edited, it’s a small gem, and doesn’t run one second too long. So where can you see it?
