In Good Company

Dennis Quaid stars as Dan, a fiftyish ad executive who is shocked to find that his new boss Carter (Topher Grace) is half his age. Even worse, Carter takes up a romance with Dan's daughter Alex (Scarlett Johansson). The movie, written and directed by Paul Weitz, has its heart in the right place, but struggles to find its tone. It swings awkwardly from romantic comedy to socially conscious class drama, which makes it hard to get fully involved. The writing is uneven, and the direction unremarkable, but the fine cast, all of whom are excellent, make it easy to watch and reasonable entertainment. Kudos to Weitz for resisting the impulse to give it a falsely happy ending.
