Night and the City

This picture makes "Glengarry Glen Ross" seem like "The Sound of Music." After seeing it I cannot understand what prompted them to remake it; it's not that good a story, and there's very little going on beneath the surface. About the only thing it does do is put Price's scalding dialogue on display and give DeNiro a showcase for some acting-class style fireworks (technically impressive as usual). Lange and Warden are very effective in supporting roles. But the movie lacks any real passion, and the not-quite-dismal ending smacks of Hollywood sellout. (10/23/92)
