A superb picture from Merchant/Ivory, adding the passion that some say has lacked in their work. Outstanding acting by all, including Reeve, who does a nice turn as a visiting American. Even better than “Howards End”. The picture is so finely tuned that it makes the smashing of a wine bottle more violent than all the high caliber hijinks in, say, “Demolition Man.” Sad, beautiful, and touching. (12/3/93)
