Something's Gotta Give

Short Take

Two consummate pros--Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton--are at the absolute top of their game in this romantic comedy. Keaton is especially good as Erica, a successful 50-something woman convinced that her chances for love are over. (She just got a well-deserved Oscar nomination.) Amanda Peet and Frances McDormand do nice work in supporting roles, and even the much-maligned Keanu Reeves projects some warmth and humanity as a much younger man taken with Erica. Nancy Meyers directs her own script with a fine touch, though she has trouble finding a clean way to end the story. Nevertheless, the picture is heartfelt, funny, touching, and a pleasure from start to finish.
