The Sure Thing

OK let's face it. I'm in love with Daphne Zuniga. What can I say? She's perfect. Ah well, yet another in a long line of dream brunettes (who, as we all know, are really superior to blonds). Aside from all that, the movie is very good. Quite sweet, charming, and quite funny with great frequency. It started a bit slow for me; I was put off by the seeming indiscriminate use of teen slang, but once the writers got past that affectation and let the intelligence show through all was well, and I kept grinning through the rest. The only other part that did nothing for me was the english teacher. I realize that the role was necessary, but did she have to be quite so overbearingly liberal, quite so... so phony? I never met a professor like that at college or heard about one either. Small matter. John Cusack is a natural comedian, and Daphhe is as described. They really make you feel what's gping on between them. Formula stuff, all right, but the chemistry works. John playing the psycho killer is a very funny bit, and the fantasy sequences are very effective, including the last one which hits home with great force. I didn't find the west coast pair as awful as I would have expected (I'd date The Sure Thing in a second, even if she is blond) but they were icky enough, and true love triumphs in the end. Hurray.
