The Verdict

I watched this first on TV but was so annoyed by commercials and cuts that I went out and rented it the next day and watched it again. The picture is by no means great, but it is effective in that courtroom drama way, and Newman is dynamite. The business with Charlotte Rampling is ultimately sort of confusing, and I disliked the photography (everything, and I mean everything, is shot in this sort of sepia tinged tone, so that even blues and greens look brown--I guess this was part of the "mood" but it's hand on the eyes, and definitely NOT exciting to look at), but as the “Rocky” of lawyer pictures, it's pretty enjoyable.
