Forrest Gump

A wonderful, lovely, moving fable about simpleton who makes good. I didn't think Zemeckis had it in him, but this picture really does live up to the old cliché "you'll laugh, you'll cry." Hanks is exceptional, breathing life into a character that doesn't afford a lot of room for showboating; his control is impeccable, clearly his best work to date. The writing is clean and spare, and the whole movie just flows seamlessly, despite being told as essentially one long flashback. I should also mention that the special effects, while stunning. never detract from the flow of the picture. They never become the raison d'etre (as they do in “True Lies”). A real treat. A treat for adults. (7/17/94)
