My Big Fat Greek Wedding

Think of this movie as the summer's anti-blockbuster. The back story is that actress Nia Vardalos was doing a one woman show about the title subject. It was seen by Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson (who is reportedly half Greek) and they were so enamored of the material that they decided to put their considerable clout behind turning it into a movie. Born and bred Greek daughter Toula, played by Vardalos herself, is thirty, single, and fading when she meets the quintessential non-Greek Ian Miller (John Corbett). Improbably, they fall in love and marry. The end. Of course, given that their families might as well be from different planets, don't expect that this happens without some complications and angst. Still, the movie is sweet and good natured, and if it percolates uneasily just this side of the amateurish, it does boast the virtue of being heartfelt, and genuinely funny at times.
