Open Range

Short Take

Some actors seem born to star in Westerns, and Kevin Costner (who also directed) and Robert Duvall are two of them. The movie looks gorgeous, but the shopworn (clearly they were striving for timeless) plot and leaden, clichéd dialogue keep it strictly earthbound. The movie is also too long, but it has its moments, and the final shootout is pretty good. Annette Bening is on hand in the small and thankless role of the love interest.
