Rising Sun

8/12/93 • Full Review

Written by: Kaufman, Crichton, and someone else Starring: Sean Connery, Wesley Snipes, Harvey Keitel, Tia Carrere

Fun, intriguing, if ultimately incomprehensible rendering of the Crichton novel. What makes this watchable is the charisma of the two stars (especially Connery), who really sink their teeth into the roles and are just a gas. Connery's John Connor is almost James Bond reincarnated. Maybe that's why I liked it so much. Anyway, you keep waiting for the mystery to really be mysterious, so it's a bit of a letdown when it's not (the culprit is sooooo obvious), but the rendering of Japanese corporate life, while perhaps a bit xenophobic, is very well done. Once again, a movie that, like “The Fugitive,” doesn't live up to its preview. (8/12/93)
