Stargate
Starring: Kurt Russell, James Spader A really silly sci-fi adventure in which tough-guy Russell and bumbling
Egyptologist Spader (who is actually, to be fair, pretty good) travel to a distant planet to visit King Jaye Davidson and his hordes of oppressed slaves. Kind of "Star Wars" meets "Lawrence of Arabia." The effects are fair, but just about everything else is taken much too seriously. Despite its obvious expense, the picture has a sort of "thrown together at the last minute" feel to it. And when it's over, you are left vaguely unsatisfied, as if someone took your plate away halfway through a meal. Which, perhaps, is another way of saying that what we were watching wasn't very filling to begin with. (10/28/94)
