The Accused

Starring: Jodie Foster, Kelly McGillis Strong performances raise this above the level of "true-crime" muck. But for all the sound and fury, it doesn't open any new windows on the human condition. That some men are animals who deserve to be shot isn't exactly a surprise. Also, the utter lack of ambiguity in the case tends to dissipate the suspense. It is obvious that the onlookers are scumbags, regardless of whether some obscure law is used to prosecute them. Fortunately, the filmmakers avoid the treacly trap of having the two principals become best pals. They are from different worlds, and both know it. Overall, a decent picture whose moral fervor tends to overshadow its drama. (9/5/93)
