The Return of the Secaucus Seven

John Sayles’s first feature, and the picture that “The Big Chill” was so unfavorably compared when it came out. You can see the similarities in the films, but they are both highly original work. This film is sort of choppy, and at times sort of amateurish, but that may be part of what makes it work. Sayles feeling his oats, I guess. It's a bit overlong, but it is almost always spirited and engaging, with fine ensemble work and some very nice portrayals by the performers. Quite enjoyable on its own, and a preview of what Sayles gives us later.
