Reuben, Reuben

I’ve been meaning to see this for a long time, and I finally did, and I'm glad. This is a comedy, sort of, about past his prime drunken poet (played to perfection by Tom Conti) who now makes his living by lecturing and entertains himself by seducing every woman he can. The film is one of the wittiest and most intelligent you're likely to see ever, and very funny to boot (and when the comedy is black, it's heart wrenching). The movie (based on book by Peter DeVries) is so subtle and understated that it makes its points about life without ever stepping out of character. Reautiful to look at, and the picture introduces a stunner by the name of Kelly McGillis (see “Witness” below). You may have mixed feelings about the ending, but there is little doubt that you will be moved.
