Thief of Hearts

I watched this mainly for Steven Bauer (who was Manny in you-know-what) and while the picture is more of a drip than anything, I still think he has great potential, This was a potentially intriguing idea, about a thief who steals a woman's diaries and, armed with the knowledge therin, sets out to create her fantasies, But they don't play that aspect out nearly long enough, or have as much fun with it as they should have, The whole thing just seems so slight and insignificant. I think the problem is that the filmmakers got scared off by the potential heat of the situation, (and inherent scariness I guess) and toned it down to the point of tepidity, It never quite creates the mood it seemed to be wanting to go for, and I never quite believed any of it. It also mixes in a little marital drama, and a weak study of a man obsessed by a woman he has never met. Perhaps the most interesting thing in the picture is George Bendt (Norm on Cheers) in brief but uncharacteristically serious role. When that is the most interesting thing in a picture, you know it never gels. Oh well,
